Renovation Plumbing Is What We Specialise In

Darken Plumbing Group has over five years of plumbing experience across Melbourne's eastern suburbs, and renovations and extensions are the core of our work. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and extensions are what we do week in, week out.

We can take on the whole job, or come in for the stages you need, whether that is the strip out, the rough in, the fit off, or all three. We work with homeowners and builders, and we work to the build programme.

We use fixtures and fittings from established plumbing suppliers, turn up when we say we will, and give you a clear price before any work starts. Contact us today for a free quote.

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Either works. On most jobs we work straight to the builder's programme and coordinate the rough-in and fit off with them. If you are managing the renovation yourself, we will tell you what has to happen before and after our stages so the trades line up.

  • Usually yes, but it is the decision that most affects cost. Moving waste is harder than moving water because it needs fall, and how hard it is depends on where the existing drainage runs and what the floor is. We will look at that before you lock the layout in.

  • Before the rough-in, because the pipework has to be set out for the actual fixtures. A wall-hung pan, a freestanding bath and a shower with two outlets all need different setout. If the fixtures change afterwards, the pipework has to change with them.

  • Normally two main stages. The rough-in happens once the room is stripped and before waterproofing and tiling. The fit off happens once the tiling and cabinetry are done. Some jobs need a short third visit for the final connections.

  • It depends on how much is moving. Keeping fixtures roughly where they are is at the lower end. Relocating a bathroom, adding a second one or extending services into a new part of the house sits well above that. We will price it on the layout, not on a rate card.

  • Yes. It is the same work at a larger scale, with the drainage and water supply extended out to the new part of the house and connected back into the existing system at the right points.

The Rough-In Is Where the Room Is Decided

By the time tiling starts, the plumbing decisions are already made. Waste and water have to land exactly where the new layout puts them, and the falls have to be right before the waterproofing goes down.

Getting that wrong is not a small fix. It means pulling up tiling and waterproofing that has already been paid for.

Working Around What Is Already There

Older homes rarely have accurate records of where the drainage and water lines run. On a renovation that matters, because the layout you want has to work with what is in the ground.

We locate the existing services first, which is the same skill we use on drainage work, then plan the new runs around what we find.

Kitchens and Laundries

Kitchens usually mean a sink and mixer, a dishwasher point, sometimes filtered water, and a gas cooktop connection. Moving the sink to an island is the change that most often needs new drainage under the floor.

Laundries are simpler but easy to get wrong. Trough, taps, machine points and a floor waste all need to suit how the room is actually used.

Hot Water and Renovations

A renovation is the right time to deal with a tired hot water system, because the plumber is on site and the walls are open.

It also matters for the finished result. Adding a second shower to a system that was already marginal is something you notice every morning afterwards.
